Description

The tomb of Edward J. Berwind (1848-1936), modeled on the Tower of the Winds, Athens. Berwind attended the U.S. Naval Academy and served until 1875. He then entered the coal business. He and his brother Charles acquired coal mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, and after his brother's death Edward became head of the Berwind-White Coal Company, which became the largest coal mining operation in America.
