Coal—in the ground, dark, solid—is about as far removed from the winds as can be imagined.  But when the family of Edward J. Berwind (1848-1936) looked for a design for a mausoleum to preserve his remains and memory and those of his family, they, or the architect they hired, looked to an ancient Greek design, the Tower of the Winds at Athens.  The play on their family name—“Berwind”—probably helped them to agree on the final design.
